Fourteen-year-old Yusuke Urameshi is having a typical day. He's skipping lectures, argueing with his friends and teachers, and fighting his rival Kuwabara.

Yusuke leaves the school grounds and wastes some time walking around the town. A young boy is playing ball near the road, and kicks his ball in to Yusuke. Yusuke explains to him that playing ball near the road is dangerous. The kid walks away continuing to play ball, Yusuke can't be bothered to tell him again, he can run into the road for all he cares. Unfortunately that is exactly what the young boy does.

Yusuke spots a speeding car, and dives in front of the speeding car and rescues the boy. When he comes to Yusuke is floating 10 feet above his body. Yusuke is dead
